BIM Level 2 has been a national, government-driven goal for the UK construction sector since 2011. In support of this, a large suite of standards has been published, with knock-on demand for supplementary tools, management processes and upskilling. BS 1192 and PAS 1192-2 have been at the core of the UK standards, setting out the code of practice and the management process requirements for implementing BIM Level 2 on a project/programme of projects.
We have now seen the publication of the first two international (ISO) standards on BIM processes – ISO 19650 Parts 1 and 2 – and these have also been adopted by CEN (European Committee on Standardization). This is the start of a set of changes around BIM standards. The UK is leading much of this work, and is heavily involved in pretty much all of it, at both ISO and CEN levels.
This Panel Discussion brings together 3 of the UK’s BIM standardisation experts, to help LCEC Members and other Delegates understand what is going on, why international standards for BIM are important and how it might affect what you do. At the very least, this discussion should give you a head-start in getting used to some new BIM language.
Dr Anne Kemp is the convenor (chair) of the ISO Working Group developing the ISO 19650 series of standards. She also convenes the BIM Strategy and Business Planning Task Force at ISO and chairs the UK BIM Alliance. Dr Marzia Bolpagni is Task Group Leader at CEN Working Group developing the European BIM standard on ‘Level of Information Need’ and Ambassador of the UK BIM Alliance. David Churcher is the author of ISO 19650-1, has been involved in writing the transitional guidance published by BSI, and is now writing ISO 19650 Part 3 which will in due course supersede PAS 1192-3.
This line up of BIM experts is NOT to be missed!
